PORTFOLIO EXAMPLES: INFORMATION
DESIGN
A successful information designer or
information architect understands the way users access information,
but also realizes that there are other variables and important
factors that need to be taken into account when accomplishing
a certain task.
Therefore, there are many variations
on the role and work of an information designer, in part because
information design is a derivative of several other fields
of work. They include systems analysis, visual design, the
library sciences, as well as psychology, anthropology, and
economics.
At its core, information design is
a balance between user needs and business requirements. While
the increased visibility of Web usability has taught us to
focus on the visitor, it has overshadowed the fact that there
are business needs must be addressed. By matching user needs
and business objectives it is possible to produce a system
that is useable and useful to the viewer but also meets the
needs of the sponsoring party.
Information Design Documentation (IDD)
is a crucial component of successful product planning and
implementation, so it is important that IDD deliverables communicate
as effectively as possible.
