AUDIO AND VIDEO STREAMING FOR THE WWW

This advanced course facilitates the creative use of the audio and video technologies for the World Wide Web. The course assignments include conceptual development, production assignments, discussions and critique. Students learn skills to tackle all stages of streaming media processes, and more importantly, they acquire a discipline of thought that encourages a vigorous planning both for "live" and "on-demand" streaming.

The following issues are raised:

- What makes an idea well-suited to audio/video streaming and what is the process for turning that raw material into a compelling product?

- What existing models and technologies of streaming can we draw upon in an effort to innovate? How does one write a script for a piece of interactive streaming video?

- What are the latest developments in streaming technology that may affect the genesis of a project?

For students undertaking a large streaming web project in the near future, this class will provide an excellent opportunity to rigorously explore an idea, as well as receive detailed feedback before venturing into production.

NOTE: The featured websites are quite large and few of them do reside on the external servers. Please have Internet connection present to enjoy the viewing of the entire project. Appropriate plug-ins such as Shockwave and RealPlayer are required.
