Muromachi Period (1192-1573 A.D.)


During this period, the aristocratic culture of the Heian period decayed and the Samurai gained power.
Clothes were modified to be simpler and easier to move around in to fit the more active lifestyle of the Samurai.

   
 


Today's Kimono was based on the Muromachi age.
Due to Many Dutch and Portuguese came to Japan.
People wore "Sarasa" which was printed cotton and velvet and satin.
Samurai dressed "Hitatare"for formal wear. And wore "Nagabakama".
Especially, Samurai has his special initial on his family crest.

The word "samurai" originally means "people who wait to serve their masters". Samurai were mere warriors who served aristocrats in Heian period. In the absence of an effective centralized military system, however, warrior bands began to assume more power, first in the provinces and then over the court when the Taira family (Heike, Heishi) seized power in Kyoto, the capital at that time, in the mid-12th century.
